The International Planned Parenthood Federation
The International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) the world's largest voluntary organisation in the field of sexual and reproductive health and rights, founded in Bombay in 1952. The IPPF links national Family Planning Associations (FPAs) in over 180 countries worldwide, with the aim of increasing support for, and access to sexual and reproductive health services.
What does the Federation do?
IPPF campaigns locally, regionally and internationally, through policy makers, opinion leaders, professionals and the media to increase support for reproductive health and family planning worldwide.
Through its expert international advisory panels, IPPF works to set standards in contraceptive safety, programme management, service provision and gender equity.
IPPF supports women's reproductive rights, both at the national, advocacy level and, at the individual level, by focusing on quality of care in the provision of family planning services specifically designed to meet women's needs.
IPPF's member Associations provides reproductive health services, including counselling, information, and a choice of family planning methods and providers. They seek to convince governments and policy-makers to improve national health services. Many work to prepare adolescents for responsible parenthood; others offer such services as infertility treatment, premarital counselling, pregnancy testing and breast and cervical cancer screening.
Six regions are represented in IPPF:
Africa Region (ARO)
Arab World Region (AWR)
East & South-East Asia and Oceania Region (ESEAOR)
European Network (EN)
South Asia Region (SAR)
Western Hemisphere Region (WHR)
IPPF European Network
The IPPF European Network (IPPF EN) is one of six regions of the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) concerned with sexual and reproductive health and rights. One of the strengths as an organisation is well-established network of Family Planning Associations (FPAs), which is spread over 38 countries in Europe, Central Asia and the Former Soviet Union.
The Mission of IPPF EN is
To advance and defend the basic human right of all people to make free and informed choices in their emotional, sexual and reproductive lives; to strive for the development and provision within Europe of high quality, accessible information, education and health services regarding sexuality and sexual identities, conception, contraception and safe abortion.
Sexual and Reproductive health, choice and rights
HEALTH – Sexual and Reproductive health is integral to a person’s physical, mental and social well-being.
With access to contraceptive options, information and counselling, everyone can protect their own health, including the consequences of unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted infection, including HIV/AIDS.
CHOICE – We believe people should have access to sexual and reproductive health information and services when and where they are needed.
People need to have the possibility to choose the contraceptive method that most suits their needs.
RIGHTS – Women, men and young people, have the BASIC human right to make free and informed choices regarding their sexual and reproductive health.
All women, men and young people, must be able to exercise the rights to obtain sexual and reproductive health care and to enjoy their sexuality responsibly and free from coercion, discrimination and violence.
IPPF EN Field Office for Central Asia Region
Geographically and historically the Central Asian Region belongs to Europe and since 1993 IPPF EN has started its activities in CAR. It was the time of new independent states formation. The goal of IPPF in CA region based on global missions is as follows: ‘The improvement of reproductive health of society by increasing the quality and availability of information and services for all population sectors’.
The fulfilment of this goal was supported by the projects implementation, the first project was “Revision and Adaptation of Reproductive Health and Family Planning Curricula for Pre-service and In-service Training of Doctors, Midwives and Nurses in the Central Asia Republics” funded by UNFPA.
The second project to achieve the goal was “Peer Led Sexuality Education” funded by UNFPA. During the project implementation NGO’s volunteers advocated for youth reproductive health, HIV/AIDS prevention among youth. Policy makers, religious leaders, educational authorities and a lot of young people were involved in discussions and activities within the project. Probably for most of the young people it was the first time when they actually realized their own responsibility for risk behaviour and own reproductive health.
In 2002 targeting its mission and goal IPPF EN Field Office for Central Asia Region started a new Regional initiative “Protecting Reproductive Health and Rights of People on the Move” as the most vulnerable group of people in RH issues.
IPPF expresses its gratitude to all organizations supporting our activity in the region.
